The Hidden Dangers of Holiday Decorating

July 3rd, 2008

Decorating for the holidays is a fun way for you and your family to prepare for the Christmas season. Hanging ornaments on the tree, stringing lights along your eves and letting little ones help with the holiday decorating are all a wonderful part of the season.

“But,” Says Christie MacLachlan of Christmastime site Christmaslightsanddecorations.com http://Christmaslightsanddecorations.com . “with all the joy and excitement surrounding Christmas it can be easy to forget that there are some real dangers involved in adorning your home and living with holiday decorations day to day.”

According to the US National Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) and the National Protection Agency, it is estimated that nearly 6000 injuries, 33 deaths and 600 fires a year occur as a result of decorating for Christmas. Added to the over 23 million dollars in property damage caused during the holidays, a significant amount of risk is involved in decorating your home for the holidays!

The most common Christmastime injuries come from climbing and reaching, followed closely by electrocution and fires caused by improper handling of Christmas lights. Balancing on furniture such as couches and chairs that aren’t meant for climbing is the easiest way to get hurt. It’s easy to prevent injury while decorating for Christmas, though! MacLachlan sites these simple tips to improving your holiday safety.

? Make sure you follow safe practices when working up high. Always use ladders for climbing and don’t overextend your reach. Check that your ladder is sturdy and be sure to have someone hold the bottom so that it doesn’t slip. For extra safety, you can hire a professional roofer to put up your roof top decorations.

? When you’re installing your Christmas lights make sure they are undamaged. Frayed strings and exposed wires can cause a serious risk of electrocution both inside and outside. Also, do not ever try to force a plug into a socket - you may need to use an extension cord to properly fit your light string to your electricity source.

? After decorating pay close attention to everyday safety. Christmas lights and candles are a fire risk, so monitor them closely. Anything that creates heat should be not be put near Christmas trees or any flammable material and should not be left on when you are not there to keep an eye on them. Also make sure that none of your decorations obstruct any high traffic areas. Place decorations away from spots where they are at risk of tripping or injuring someone.

? Children are especially susceptible to injury from Christmas decorations. The twinkling lights and unusual shapes are a major attraction to little fingers. Kids are especially at risk for burns and electrocutions - they might not think twice about putting their hands up to flames or playing with wires and electrical sockets.

? Be aware of your fragile glass decorations, too. Broken decorations are a choking hazard for children and can cause serious scratches and cuts. The best way to keep little ones safe is to hang all decorations far out of reach! Also, parents should be mindful of poisonous plants such as poinsettia, which can harm children and pets if consumed.

“Keep your Christmas decorating safe this year by being aware of the dangers and working to prevent accidents,” says MacLachlan. Practice common sense holiday safety throughout your home this season so you and your family can enjoy and happy accident and injury-free Christmas.

Search Engines on the Grapevine

July 3rd, 2008

It used to be whenever you needed to find something on the web you just opened IE to Yahoo and just enter in what you were looking for. Then you would scroll through the millions of matches and hope to find exactly what you wanted or needed. There were some smaller engines besides Yahoo but the majority of searches were either done on Yahoo or maybe AOL depending on who your supplier of the internet was.

Along came Google and with all the money that Google spent on marketing they were now the most used search engine. Their index was by far not the largest but they definitely spent the most money on the marketing because everybody knew who Google was. AllTheWeb had an index at least twice as large but they spent virtually no money on marketing and not many people even knew that they were out there.

Now with social networking and social bookmarking plus the technology of Web 2.0 there are a lot of new kids on the block. It used to be that no matter what somebody was looking for they would use just one search engine for all of their searches. Not anymore, there are now search engines for every niche and every genre. If you have something that you need and you can’t find a search engine just close your eyes because it will probably be there tomorrow.

If I wanted a pizza delivered to my house I used to just go to Yahoo and in quotes enter pizza delivery and then add +31520 as my area code and then on the results page I would see a list of pizza delivery businesses and how far each one was from that zip code. I could even enter in my exact address and get the exact distance from my house plus driving directions. Now, you just go to local.com and you can find businesses, entertainment, and activities =for any city worldwide. This site will be great for anybody that has to do a lot of travel.

For marketing in order for me to analyze the page rank and traffic for a site I would need to have the Google toolbar installed and then go to the site Alexa.com. After Alexa I would then check incoming and outgoing links for the site plus look at who visits the site and where these visitors go before and after this site. I could do a lot of this just with Alexa but this gave me a biased look at the site. Now I have found a great search engine that will return so much detail that I no longer have to have all these toolbars installed and I only have to visit just this one site. Visit Golexa.com and let me know what you think of this great site.

To assist me with this one site I could even look at PRSearch.biz. This site would be a great compliment or even a replacement for Golexa and it beats having to download and install toolbars which are known to be Spyware or Adware. I have grown so tired of having to remove Spyware and Adware from my computer 2 or 3 times a week. If I don’t remove these things then I will get a lot of annoying popups plus my system will get severely bogged down and eventually I will have to shut down and restart my system just to free up memory. This can be a pain in the ass if you are like me and have all these different app’s open at the same time.

Do you have children? would you like to allow them to perform searches on the web without having to constantly look over their should at what will come up as results? Now you can let them to go to this site and not have to worry kids.quintura.com/ http://kids.quintura.com/ . Keep them off of sites like MySpace because of the ads you see on the site lately. I am a big believer in the sites like MySpace but you ought to see some of the ads and comments you can get with a profile on MySpace. I’ve seen hookers, escorts and strippers placing comments on peoples profiles.

Social networking and social bookmarking are a growing trend these days though. They need to come up with a one word acronym to reference these sites like the grapevine or something like it. There are now search engines that specialize in these social searches. Check out Omgili, Sproose, or Url dot com. After you have visited these sites make sure you look at Diigg, Del.icio.us, Shadows, or even Yahoo’s MyWeb .Web 2.0 is definitely making a difference with shared bookmarks, Collaborative directories and Taggregators. Do a search on one of these terms and check them out yourself, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

If all you want to do is find the best deals and bargains then you need to look at the following engines; gnod.net, like.com, slifter.com, and thefind.com. For music and video go to blabline.com, blinks.com, findsounds.com, and Gruuve.com. There are even engines in other languages like Gennio for Hispanic people. This social Spanish engine will even allow you to search for a business in Madrid and once you find the business you are looking for it will let you call that place for free through the internet. Answerbus.com allows you to ask your question in English, French, Spanish, German or even Italian.

I found one site that even lets you create your own search bot which is called searchbots.net and another one called Mojeek.com. You can search using Web 2.0 with web20searchengine.com and their are sites for science related searches, and pretty much almost anything you can think of. I am a webmaster myself in addition to everything else I do so I will be using Zippy.co.uk. My wife will be using Zabasearch because she does a lot of work for a nonprofit and with this site she can look up people and public information.

If you are like me and want to do research and try to discover the latest trends in search engines then do a search for search engines ,+directory or social search engine ,+directory and you will find some great new sites. My son, Jake, is real big with these web communities so I will be telling him to look at Zenome.com.

5 Simple Steps to a Website that Makes Sales

July 3rd, 2008

Is your website producing leads for you or is it just sitting out there in cyberpace looking pretty? Obviously, you want your website to work for you to generate leads and make sales, not just be a pretty brochure for your business.

Here are 5 simple ways you can make your website make more sales for you.

1. A Professional Look

It needs to LOOK professional - which is different that it being created by a professional (although that is certainly an option). By looking professional, I mean that there are NO ADS, especially anything that flashes, jumps around, or otherwise looks like a casino.

2. A Way For Prospects to Contact You

You want to make sure you give your visitors a way to contact you, preferably in the upper top right corner or sidebar on the left - but still above the fold (no scrolling down to try to find out how to hire you!). Include your dedicated email address* and your business phone number. Add a physical address at the bottom of your page to solidify your existence.

*You need to have a dedicated email address - which means that your email is something like alicia@clientabundance.com alicia@clientabundance.com and not allyoop@yahoo.com allyoop@yahoo.com . A dedicated email address comes with your web host. Follow their instructions on how to set one up.

You don’t want a potential client slipping away because he or she can’t locate your email address or phone number.

3. Your Enticing Copy and Sign-Up Form for Your Free Taste

You need to have a way to capture your visitors. By this, I don’t mean the number of people who visit your site (your web host’s stats can tell you this if you want to know). I mean that you need a way to capture your visitors email addresses so you can continue to build a relationship with them.

Put a sign-up form to join your email list in exchange for a ‘free taste’ of what it is that you’re offering in a prominent place on your homepage (and every other page, for that matter, as you never know where someone will enter your site first).

4. Connect with Your Visitor on Multiple Levels

Do this by adding a picture of you, if possible. This is not necessary, but it truly does lend credibility when people can see the person behind the text. You don’t have to have a professional photo taken, but again, do try to look professional in it.

You can also add an audio welcome if you desire. This will appeal to your visitors who prefer to hear your voice and it adds to your credibility as well.

5. Your yes Questions Prominently Displayed…

..followed by your call to action, which is the offer to sign up for your Free Taste. Your yes questions are a way that your visitors resonate with what it is that you’re offering. In other words, when they read them, in their mind they are answering yes, that’s me and nodding their heads.

There’s much more that you can do to tweak your website to make sure that it’s giving you a return on your investment, but this will get you started. Take a look at your website today and see which of the 5 strategies above you can implement now to start creating more sales for you today.

Age Discrimination Rules Conflict With Work Permits UK

July 3rd, 2008

IMMIGRATION MATTERS

Advertisements for job vacancies to prove the ‘resident labour test’ could conflict with new Age Discrimination regulations.

A work permit for a non-shortage occupation such as a senior carer, must pass the resident labour test. In other words, the post must be advertised in order to demonstrate that you cannot fill the position within the EU labour market. The Home Office normally requires that a certain number of years’ experience is stated in the text of the advertisement. However, this now falls foul of new Age Discrimination (Employment Equality Regulations 2006) which came into force on 1 October 2006.

You can no longer place advertisements which mention the number of years experience required. The Job Centre will not accept advertisement that specify the number of years experience needed for the job and are even reluctant to include the word “Senior” in the job title as this may imply the job is only open to senior citizens!

Work Permits UK has not yet made an announcement on whether they will accept the new style advertisements and the case workers we spoke to seemed unaware of the new regulations.

Savor A Melony Treat In True Honeydew Style

July 3rd, 2008

Historically speaking, melons have long been a part of our diet in one form or another. Available in different varieties, melons are a top favorite not only with the Americans but also in other countries of the world, the chief reason being its categorization as a fruit cum vegetable. This perplexity also pertains to its history. Food historians fluctuate between Persia, Afghanistan, or Armenia as the probable locales where melons were first consumed. China is not the best bet among the historians, as many believe that the Chinese consumed the wild bitter variety, which could not be eaten raw. Melons were introduced in Europe in the 16th century, but were grown under glass bells, in glasshouses, or in steam-pits. Meanwhile, after reaching China, melons slowly began to develop into cooking varieties, and reached the New World when Columbus took the seeds to Haiti on his second voyage. When his men had eaten the fruit and discarded the seeds, huge acres of crop appeared all over.

Honeydew melon is one of the most savored varieties of melons, especially for Americans. Ancient Egyptians, thousands of years ago, and ages before that in Persia, where the muskmelon is thought to have originated, prized this sweet, succulent member of the muskmelon family. Luckily for Americans, honeydew melons are now grown in California and parts of the Southwest. This nutritious fruit snack is rich in Vitamin C and is a great source of foliate, which is known for its power of overcoming birth defects during child expectancy. A cup of honeydew yields just 60 calories and around 70% of our body’s daily requirement of vitamin C. Its ample water content also compensates loss of body water during hot summer days. Being low on sodium, and nil on fat and cholesterol, honeydew melons offer 100% on the critical energy component found in functional foods. These nutritional advantages make it an ideal choice for both weight control and general health. This juicy melon also offers stiff resistance against cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.

With so many nutritional benefits on offer, honeydew melons have become a hot favorite, especially in the US. It’s however, essential to judge the quality of the fruit prior to its purchase. Honeydew melons are distinguished by their smooth, creamy-yellow rind and pastel green flesh that’s amazingly succulent and juicy. A perfectly ripe honeydew melon can be judged by its wrinkling on the surface, often detected only by touch. Ranging in weight from 4 to 8 pounds, honeydew melons need to be picked judiciously. It’s important to choose only those melons that are too heavy for their size. If the melon is under ripe, it is advisable to keep them at room temperature. Ripe honeydew melons can be wrapped in plastic bags and stored in the refrigerator for five days. This wonderful melon treat can be used in salads, deserts, fruit soups, or as a garnish. The common and the best among the winter melon varieties, honeydew melons can be savored in different forms as part of your low calorie healthy diet.

How to Optimize Your Web Site 15%, 27%, 134% - and Start Making Real Money

July 3rd, 2008

Does your web site make you money?

How long has your web site been running?

One year? Two years? Maybe even three?

Over those three years your web site could have been a turbo-charged money machine, cranking out profits for you and your family night and day, week after week, month after month.

But has it? Or has it just sat there, looking pretty. Maybe lots of graphics and Flash animations. Maybe lots of visitors …

Maybe it just costs you money, because you have to pay for web hosting?

If so, a lot of other web site owners are in the same boat.

But did you know, if you change just one part of your web site, you can make your web site profitable?

Change your headline, for example, and you can increase your response by 500%.

Write 10 different headlines and one may be a winner.

But how do you find the winner?

The answer is, you have to test as many different headlines as you can, until you find the winner.

How do you test? We’ll come to that in a moment.

Other factors that make your web site a winner or a loser are, for example, your offer (do people want your product?), your opening para (paragraph), bullet points, testimonials, close, PS and bonuses.

But consider this.

Say you write 10 headlines, 10 offers, 10 opening paras, 10 testimonials, 10 closes and 10 bonuses.

You now have a MILLION different combinations (10 to the 6th power = 1,000,000) to test, to discover the perfect blend of web site variables!

Headline B works well with opening para A, but not with bonus B. Headline A works well with bonus B, but not with opening para A and so on … up to 10 to the 6th power!

How do you find the best mix out of a million?

Sounds impossible? Right?

In the old days, before the Internet, if you were a direct marketer, all you could do was a “split-run test” (also known as an “A B split test”) - test only two parts of your sales letter at a time.

You’d send out, say 3,000 letters with headline A to 3,000 names on a list. And then another 3,000 letters with headline B to 3,000 different names on a list.

You’d also somehow code each letter (perhaps include a coupon for the reader to fill out to get a discount or free sample), so you’d know which letter brought the highest response.

Then you’d wait. And wait.

Eventually, after a few weeks you’d have your responses, and you’d have a good idea which headline worked best.

You’d then send the best-performing letter to the rest of the names on your list.

Or you’d test the best-performing letter against one with another headline. Again send the letter with headline A (if that was the stronger letter from the first test) to, say, 3,000 names on your list, and the letter with headline C to another 3,000 list names.

Again, you’d wait. And wait …

This was a real pain, but it was the only way to find the winning letter. It took a LOT of time and often a LOT of money.

Enter the Internet. And very powerful web site testing software.

With this “multivariate” (or “multivariable,” “Taguchi multivariate”) software you can now test multiple variables (headline, bonuses, PS and so on) of a web page sales letter at the same time.

You can write, say, 16 headlines, 16 opening paras, 16 sets of bonuses, 16 closes and so on and test them all at the same time.

The software will tell you the best blend of elements that make up the most powerful sales letter. You won’t have to spend months, or even years, doing very boring A/B split testing.

And a dynamite sales letter will turn your web site into a 24/7 money generator.

To find out more about how this amazing new software can transform an underperforming web site that loses you money into a constant money machine, go to www.KaizenTrack.com/bletter.php http://www.KaizenTrack.com/bletter.php .

There’s a special offer right now, but it’s limited. So you’ll have to hurry.

Gout! The Cause, the Symptoms, and the Natural Treatment

July 3rd, 2008

Ouch It’s midnight and you are awakened by a horrific pain shooting through your big toe. The throbbing toe is red and swollen and feels as if it’s on fire. If you or a loved one can relate to this experience, chances are likely that you suffer from gout. Numerous questions plagued your mind like Can I survive another night with this pain? ….so we narrowed down your most important questions on gout and answered them! What is gout? What are the symptoms of gout? What causes gout? Am I at risk for gout? Is there a natural treatment for gout? Keep reading to begin the road to recovery! And guess what, it’s only 2 hours away!

What is gout?

Simply put, gout is a form of arthritis that often occurs in the middle of the night. Often labeled the ‘disease of kings’ gout haunts over 2 million Americans annually. Gout is also known as the most painful types of arthritis. Gout results when needle-like crystals of uric acid form in the body’s connective tissue or lodge themselves in the space between two bones or joints. These uric acid crystals inflame the surrounding area and lead to gout’s symptoms: Heat, Pain, Redness, Stiffness, Swelling, Arthritis attacks that develop in short time period (e.g., 12-24 hours), and Arthritis Attacks to one joint. Typical joints affected by gout include: elbows, fingers, heels, instep, and wrists. To view some photos of gout sufferers please click on our link below. Unfortunately, this is not all of the symptoms. Gout can also cause high blood pressure and kidney stones if left untreated. These symptoms can also be life-threatening if left untreated.

But why do I suffer?

The Cause of Gout

To answer what causes gout? We need to understand how uric acid appears in the body. You see, uric acid is actually a byproduct of a very necessary part of your body’s normal function. However, gout sufferers often have higher levels of uric acid (called hyperuricemia) caused from the body’s inability to break down the uric acid. The uric acid is typically eliminated from the body through the urine. If, however, you suffer from gout, the build up of uric acid crystals can find their way to joint spaces where they will cause painful inflammation that appear as lumps under the skin and can even disrupt the functioning of the kidney and cause the formation of kidney stones. Gout can cause serious damage quickly, it is extremely important that you treat your gout immediately.

Who’s at risk for Gout?

Why could you be suffering from the horrific pain of gout? There could be various factors but here is what typically increases uric acid in the blood causing the gout:

1. Lifestyle: From eating to drinking to weight, your lifestyle - particularly your diet - can greatly affect your chances of getting gout.

2. Alcohol: More than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women - can quickly lead to gout. Especially, stay away from beer.

3. Overweight: People who weigh 30 pounds or more than their model weight risk getting gout simply because there is more tissue available for breaking down the uric acid. Diets rich in purine food can also increase your chances for gout. For more information, please check out our report at our link below.

4. Medical Conditions: Various medical conditions can also increase your chances of gout. Do you have any of the following: high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high levels of fat or cholesterol in blood), arteriosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries), recent surgery or bed rest, and recent chemotherapy?

5. Medications: Are you currently on any of the following medications which may cause gout: diuretics (for hypertension, edema and heart disease), anti-inflammatory medicines with salicylic acid (such as aspirin), niacin (also called nicotinic acid) and a few others. It is noted, please do not stop taking these medications before talking with your doctor.

6. Family History: One out of every four people afflicted with gout have a family history with gout.

7. Age and Sex: Men are most often affected with gout as well as women who have reached menopause. Men typically develop gout between the ages of 30 and 50.

Understanding what places you at risk of the disease is an important step in taking control of your health and life. Gout can be naturally treated or be deadly in some cases. So that brings up the question, how do you treat gout naturally?

Depression In Children

July 3rd, 2008

Depression affects children the same way that it affects adults. Now in most cases, trauma is a reason why depression will affect a person. Of course, trauma affects those of all ages, including children. It should be no surprise that children suffer from depression also. The youngest case of depression ending with suicide is five years old. With this information in hand, it can and should be taken quite seriously if you supsect a child is sad or depressed.

1. The Numbers

In fact, three out of every 100 children are depressed. Its hard to tell what causes depression in children, but every aspect of a child or teens life affects their state of mind. With one bit of criticism, a child could break down and become unreachable. Telling whether or not a child is depressed can be quite different from telling if an adult is depressed.

2. For Parents

Parents need to know that your child isnt depressed because you are a bad parent. You child could be depressed for many reasons and death of family or friends is usually the root of the cause. Some signs that your child may be depressed at absences from school, isolation, change in behavior, and headaches. Of course, they could have the typical signs like overeating, eating too little or not sleeping or oversleeping.

3. The Signs Of Depression

The signs of depression are greatly varied. You might not even notice it at first or push it off as normal behaviour. Life goes fast and we tend to notice the things that we dont really want to see. The only way to find out how your child feels is to ask them how they feel. Be active in your child or teens life. Do activities together and have some time set aside to talk about the trauma of being a kid in days world. Remember, youre not a bad parent if you snoop around a little bit.

How to Choose a Computer for your Business

July 3rd, 2008

You get the most out of your technology. You have been using your latest computer for about 4 years. And now you are noticing just how slow that computer has become. Needs change and you need something that keeps pace with your business. But what should you be looking for? Let’s sit down and do a consultation. This is the same advice that I would give my clients if asked this question.

Mobile or Desk Bound

The first question you need to be asking is a basic one. Does your business dictate a laptop or a desktop computer? If you make frequent presentations on the road, a laptop is a must. If you want something that is on the highest end of processor power, you should consider a desktop computer. Desktop computers always run higher on processing power than laptops. Laptops require miniaturization and, as such, take longer to develop. Hence, they are always behind the power curve. Will this computer be acting as a server? Will it serve up files to other computers on your network. If that’s the case, you won’t be wanting to take that out of the office. That would disconnect users from their data. And that’s a no-no.

The Price Point

Never ever go after a computer based on an initial price. Most brand name computer manufacturers have learned a marketing trick. They put a computer sticker price at the lowest possible price. But this price will not be the price you will pay. Unless you want the barest bones computer you can imagine. You will almost always end up paying hundreds more than the initially quoted price once you’re done. It’s just a sneaky way to get you in the door. But there are other reasons you should never go on price alone.

It’s All About Support

Probably the single most important factor for choosing a computer these days is support. What kind of support will you have once this company has made a sale? A while ago, computers differed tremendously in their configuration and components. But things have changed. Now, computers are incredibly modular. Most of the major manufacturers use very similar, or identical, components. There are many reasons for this change, but all you need to know is that the main issue isn’t components anymore. It really is about the post sale support. Research your manufacturer and get the skinny on their class of support. If you are going after a local cheapy beware. Sure, you may get an excellent deal, but will they be around if the computer breaks?

The Middle Road is Golden

People tend to make one of two mistakes when they buy a computer. They either tend to buy too little computer or too much. Don’t go after a super cheap computer. It’s almost always a bad idea, unless you happen across a great deal. In my experience, this rarely happens. Also, don’t get top of the line components in your computer. You will pay a premium for these items. And in six months, you will be kicking yourself as those components have depreciated tremendously. A good rule of thumb is to look at the low and high ends and pick something in between. You will get a great deal for your money and it will last you many years.

Essential Software

A lot of computer vendors are in the habit of stuffing software onto systems. They will give you everything you don’t need. This gives the illusion of value. But really that software will just bloat your system. You only need a few pieces of software really. Obviously, there is the operating system, or OS. This will most likely be Windows. Then you need an office suite. Again, this will most likely be a Windows based product like Office. As a sidenote, you may want to look at Openoffice(openoffice.org). It’s free and is compatible with Microsoft Office. Just make sure you get the right version of Office. This is especially true of Powerpoint, Microsoft’s presentation software. Not all versions have Powerpoint included.

Don’t get bogged down in all the options. Just remember, most computers are basically the same. They have most of the same hardware and software. I have discussed some of the major differences. Remember, in this day and age, it really is about the support.
