Quilting is a fabulous way to learn some of the basic skills in sewing. Although there are some very intricate and complicated quilts, there are also a huge amount of very simple patterns. Not only are they full of straight lines, the finished products are magnificent, and plentiful.

What we love the most is, despite the simplicity of some patterns, the finished products look quite difficult. When my daughter started sewing, at the age of 3, she completed several quilting projects. They truly are easy! Yes, straight lines are important for quilting, BUT they are NOT critical at this point. If you look closely at the projects my daughter completed, you will see many imperfections. However, we do not call them that - we call it character!

We have used quilting to make pillows, purses, bags, blankets, and are venturing into clothes. Today we saw book covers, wallets, and hats that were quilted. The possibilities are unlimited.

The other great thing about quilting is that the history is fascinating and rich with stories of the past. To get you and your children even more excited about the world of quilting I highly recommend reading stories to your kids about them.

We own all of the books that are listed at the bottom of the page, and we have continued to enjoy them over the years during our reading time. My oldest daughter has included a brief summary under each one. They have all inspired my girls, and me, to want to learn the art of quilting in order to continue the quilting legacy.

I encourage you and your child to try at least one quilting project; but be careful - it is addicting!

Again, I highly recommend each of these books to spark imagination and excitement! They will make great gifts for your kids.

A special needs child can be quite a challenge for many parents, mainly due to the unique individual needs that must be addressed. Depending on the severity of the child?s condition, things such as daily care and education can become quite involved, especially if the child is medically fragile as well. Of course, a special needs child can have any number of issues going on, or it could be just a case of debilitating asthma or a food allergy that requires the child to have special attention and accommodations made for him or her. Some special needs children may be on oxygen, in a wheelchair, or require regular medications throughout the day, and schools are required to make special accommodations available for these kids.Trained staff maybe require to provide proper care that a special needs child need while away from home.

They are a number of resources to help the parent of a special needs child, depending on the level of severity of the child?s issues. Some children may not be able to attend school for medical or psychological reasons, so therefore home schooling is a possible option for a special needs child. Consider a child with severe attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, behaviour problems, autism, or even a child with an auto-immune disorder who is susceptible to every type of germ imaginable. It is not appropriate or beneficial for these special needs children to be in a traditional school environment. If home schooling is not an option, there are a number of facilities that can provide the type of care needed. A number of support groups available both locally and online are available to parents that offer comfort, encouragement, and support serving as a great resource to the parents of a special needs child.

Respite care is very important. Parents of special needs children need a break once in a while, whether it be a trusted friend, neighbour, family member. There are many respite providers who are trained in caring for these children, including registered nurses that can come to the home if needed, to give parents a chance to rejuvenate themselves physically and emotionally from time to time. It is not easy being the parent of a special needs child, but there is a lot of information, resources, and support available to most of these parents. There are many professionals, such as social workers and public and private agencies all over the country that specialize in issues related to the care of a special needs child and the family as well.

There are help forums and information available on the internet. We would encourage parents of Special needs child to read and understand as much as they could which will help built-up the understanding with their child and this is extremely important in the long run.

Like so many developments that we take for common on our computers the humble mouse had its origins in the innovative work done for more than two decades at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). The PARC mouse had two rollers for horizontal and vertical motion and a single button. The deucedly boxy shape was favored by many of developers at PARC and remarkably has persisted through many mouse (or mice) incarnations.

Firstly the Microsoft mouse design has had major impacts in the mice industry. Microsoft mice always had ergonomic design. The first Microsoft mouse had a broad teardrop shape with two buttons. The original green buttoned model had a steel ball that spawned an industry in foam mouse pads. The next iteration had larger buttons, a larger body, and a rubber coated ball.

When Microsoft decided that the mouse needed to be redesigned, it turned to the venerable firm Matrix Design of San Francisco. Microsoft routinely used and uses third parties to design and software develop many of the items and software that we take for granted today that Microsoft devoted alone . Mike Nuttal, one of Matrix Designs founders was intrigued by Microsoft’s project: reshaping the exterior without altering the internal mechanism.

Matrix did change one internal element: the position of the mouse ball. “Almost the first thing we tried was to move the ball forward”, Nuttal remarked later. In the old design the ball sat forward under the palm. A computer mouse user has a natural tendency to put their weight on the palms of their hands and thus on the ball. By moving the mouse ball forward the result was much greater accuracy of the mouse.

“We knew the buttons had to be larger “Nuttal as well said “We tried several button sizes and in the process of designing we ended up incorporating the buttons into the body of the mouse.” Another change was in the relative size of the buttons. It was felt that the left buttons should be larger than the right. The results were more than favorable especially with left handed users. By making the left button larger finger position no longer was a major factor therefore the index finger could curve form lower left to upper right ( vice versa in lefties ) . This is the position the index finger naturally favors. In addition the previous rubber-dome switches were replaced with micro switches that had a short travel depression and better tactile feedback.

It was not long before the firm Logitech responded to Microsoft’s mice innovations.

Logitech’s first mouse was truly one of the first examples of the upcoming international efforts in product development and design. A Swiss based Professor: Professor Niklaus Wirth spent a year on sabbatical at Xerox PARC in 1970 and returned to Europe to test mouse designs, working closely with Inria, a French design center for office automation products. In the end their final design was a round mouse with front mounted buttons.

Product development and testing ensued over the position of the buttons, and the front position won over the top.

However, Logitech soon found that the buttons on the front made the mouse jump backward slightly when clicked. The design was abandoned in favor of a wedge shape, which was followed by the rectangular shape that we today.

What is interesting about all of this is the effect of outside products on an item that we take for granted today - the humble mouse which so functional that we seldom give it second thought.

The rounded heel that fits so well in the palm of your hand, the large buttons, and the smooth edges all have roots in the most universal of electrical / electronic products.

It is a modeling compound bought at the hobby shops. It comes in a square block, almost like clay but it doesn’t get hard until baked. First I take the raw material, shape it by hand how I want it, fit it to the ship, carefully take it off, bake it, glue it on, and then paint it gold. To carve these pieces out of wood, I would not paint them because it would take away the wood work. But when I paint the guilded work gold I use the compound. Its almost like plastic and it works great. This compound is used for all my gold work on my model ships. I also use it sometimes for the sales, flags, and the dead-eyes.

WOOD WORK TECHNIQUES: As far as the wood work goes, I first take the raw wood ( board ) to the table saw to cut everything that I need. Then from there the rest of the pieces are cut with the scroll saw and a executive knife. No dowels are used on these model, the mast are cut square then I rasp the corners and sand until round. For all the round spindle wood work I use a drill as my lathe, then I use my files to shape and sand the parts that I need. No store bought pieces or parts, or factory cut wood, all 100% handcrafted. The raw materials that I use are, wood, Sculpey, wire, and thread. LATHE WORK: I don’t have a lathe, and I don’t use dowels, the drill is my lathe for the small parts. For the masts I take the board and cut it on the table saw into squares 1/4 x 1/4 then I rasp the corners and hand sand round. And the round spindles on the deck, I put the 1/8 round stock into my drill chuck, then I cut and sand with the files to get the shape that I want.
