Something is drawing you back to that sweaty, smelly dungeon you call a gym. We know it isn’t the juice bar that catches your fancy, because there isn’t one unless you count the spit on the floor. It’s not the gleaming chrome equipment either, because you can’t admire your reflection in standard issue black iron. So what is it? Somewhere in that psyche of yours is a guy who still gets starry-eyed every time he sees rippling mounds of muscle flexed into eye-popping, striated, rocky-ass-quarries of solid stone!

You might be too embarrassed to admit it in front of that macho group of friends you’ve worked so hard to hand pick, but lurking in that still-too-newbie body is a guy who’ll put the gym before a job, a leg day before a season finale of The Sopranos AND a grueling back workout before any thought of group sex with the Swedish Lawn Bowling Team! (Now we KNOW you’re sick!) BADA BING!

Whether it’s the packaged balance of Chris Cormier, the impressive density of Jay Cutler, or the sheer volume of Ronnie Coleman, the point is, you’re not a pro but you secretly wish you could look like one - even for a day. And that’s precisely how you train.

Why not? After all, that’s the advice that you’ve been reading, eating, breathing, and sleeping… since you picked up your first Muscle-Book. What writer doesn’t tell you to train like your favorite superhero friends? Truth is, you’ve practically been forced into it! There’s Dexter over here, telling you to train arms using his routine, Orville pleading with you to train legs until you puke, Paul screaming at you like a workout partner from the pages of some magazine, telling you that big chests only come to those who finish all their sets to failure. What else can you do, after all?

Well, mimicry may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in this case, following a pro’s workout when you’re still developing a base is thwarting your potential as a bodybuilder, and creating a mistake that you may not be able to easily correct in the future.

If you’re using an advanced routine within the first few years of your bodybuilding training career, then you’re definitely not building the right foundation, and may not be building much else. What’s more, you’re opening yourself up to injuries that can and will crop up eventually as a result of the structural vulnerabilities that you are creating today.

The first few years of your time in the gym need to be spent focusing on different aspects of training than what someone like Schlierkamp or Fux may focus on when they train. Remember, you never saw them when they first started out. If you ask them, they’d probably confirm for you that the workouts they currently use are in no way recognizable in relation to the ones they first used.

Okay, sure, mistakes are inevitable, and they are an invaluable part of finding your way around in the gym. Anyone who doesn’t advocate making mistakes hasn’t really achieved anything in their life. It’s through mistakes that we can see our paths more clearly. Trust me, no one is calling you a jackass for doing what, on the outside, makes sense. Taking expert advice is the most logical thing to want to do. Patterning oneself after those who are successful makes the likelihood of your success all the much greater. But when success gurus were busy thinking up quotable phrases, they forgot to tell you that there is a logical progression to everything.

Everyone Has A Beginning - Humble or Otherwise

The only problem with taking random expert advice is that it’s just that - random along a scale of time that no one but that person can really reference! Who knows for sure where the path may have begun for their idol? His advice can only be as meaningful in your progression as his beginnings may have been to him. Maybe your idol had a gang of muscle from other sports, and genetics to die for, before he ever crossed over to bodybuilding. Perhaps your hero was a pencil-necked geek who trained with chrome dumbbells for the first year or two of his time in the gym. You just don’t know. And since the task is to know where that beginning is, in order to make sense of pro training advice, you can see that it becomes complicated. Neither Rome, nor Ronnie Coleman, were built in a day! Remember that and you’ll never go wrong.

So STOP training like you are stepping on to an Olympia stage tomorrow, and head for the CORE.

It’s stressful isn’t it? Having to get all those things ready, trying not to forget anything, not to mention bickering kids, tantrums about what to wear or the sleepy head who doesn’t want to wake up. No, the morning rush isn’t any fun but luckily there are a few things you can do to bring peace back into your family’s morning routine.

Prepare Ahead - Sounds simple enough but did you know you could actually leave just about everything ready for the next day? It might take a few extra minutes out of your evening but you’ll be much faster if you prepare everything once the kids are asleep rather than rushing in the morning.

Lay out the kids clothes for the next day - Include things like hair clips, socks and shoes. And don’t forget to lay out your clothes too.

Leave breakfast ready (or nearly ready) - Depending on what you have for breakfast you can often pre-prepare a lot of it. If you have pancakes make the batter the night before and stick it in the fridge. If you have cereal and toast, leave the cereal out, bowls, spoons and bread. You can even set the table to save time.

Pre-Pack Lunch Boxes - If your kids take a packed lunch to school prepare it the night before. Most things like sandwiches will be fine left in the fridge overnight.

Pack Their School Bags - Look through their bags and make sure there aren’t any last minute dates or events you’ve overlooked. Pack all their books and things in their bags and leave everything by the front door.

Get The Kids Involved - The responsibility of getting the kids to school shouldn’t completely lie on your shoulders. As soon as children are old enough to help out then they should. Even the youngest of kids can help.

Make a Chart - If your kids (like most kids) are forgetful, make a chart for each one which explains in order all the things they need to do in the morning. You can draw pictures for the really young ones and write a description for the older ones. For example, you can have a picture of a toothbrush, then the school clothes, hair brush, etc.

Talk to your kids about the list beforehand and explain it to them. Then stick it up in a prominent place in their rooms and the next time they ask you “mom, what do I do know?” tell them to go look at their list. This is a great way of getting kids a little more involved and to start teaching them responsibility.

By preparing ahead you can’t avoid all of your family’s morning stresses but it will certainly help a lot, and who knows you may even have time for that extra cup of coffee.

I’ve been a NetFlix member for nearly two years now and up to Monday of last week I have had no complaints. I noticed however, that BlockBuster has a similar online DVD rental service but goes beyond NetFlix by allowing its user to also be able to return movies to their local Blockbuster store. Netflix DVDs must be mailed to them and even though there is no shipping charge, the difference in time between driving to a store to return a rental and mailing the rental via the post office is more than a day. That is why I decided to sign up as a BlockBuster Online user and try out both services. As I will show in this review, even though NetFlix invented the online DVD rental service, Blockbuster is right at its tale.

I can only guess that Blockbuster had to come up with a creative way of persuading people to try their online DVD rental service and at the same time stay away from the negative publicity their retail store received. What Blockbuster came up with was genius in my opinion: “Let users receive the DVD rentals over the mail, similar to NetFlix, however, unlike NetFlix allow users to return the DVDs to their local store”. This was probably the selling point BlockBuster was going to use. Another feature that BlockBuster implemented to allow it’s customers to receive movies faster was by initiating an agreement with the Post Office. An article from the Boston Globe describes how the company has asked the US Postal Service to scan Blockbuster return envelopes and send the firm an electronic notification so customers don’t have to wait until the envelopes are actually delivered before having the next movie on their to-see list sent out. What does this mean? Basically here is the advantage to the renter:

1. Monday: You receive your DVD movies through the mail, 1 from BlockBuster and 1 from NetFlix.

2. Tuesday: You drop off both movies at your local Post Office. The Post Office Scans in both movies. However, the difference is that BlockBuster HQ is electronically notified that their movie has been returned to the Post Office. BlockBuster knows that you have returned the movie, so they send out your next movie. NetFlix has not yet received their movie so they have not sent out there movie.

3. Wednesday: You receive your second movie from BlockBuster Online. NetFlix has just received the movie you sent on Tuesday. They ship your next movie.

4. Thursday or Friday: You receive your second movie from NetFlix.

Anyone can clearly see how BlockBuster movies arrive at least one to two days sooner than NetFlix.

Another reason why I switched is that BlockBuster sends me coupons that allow me to rent 1 movie per week from their retail store. This definitely comes in handy on a Friday night when you assumed you would have received a movie in the mail but realized you wouldn’t get it till the next day.

If you are interested in renting DVDs online, I recommend you try both services. You can try them both free for 1 month (BlockBuster Online or NetFlix) then decide which one you want to stay with. For me however, I have already decided.
