Crohns Disease In Children

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Crohn’s Disease is an incurable condition that affects the digestive tract. The symptoms are often painful and if untreated can lead to more serious conditions down the line. Children, while not the age group most likely to suffer from Crohn’s, are potentially at the greatest risk from the disease.

Children and adults are diagnosed with Crohn’s using the same diagnostic procedures. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate Crohn’s from a host of other digestive disorders, however, once it is pinpointed, it can be treated. When dealing with children, it is important to remember that since Crohn’s can affect the absorption of nutrients into the body, the disease can potentially sabotage growth and development in a young sufferer. In addition, children may experience disruptions in their academic and social development due to frequent absences from school as Crohn’s Disease often causes cramping and severe abdominal pain.

It is important for parents to become familiar with all aspects of Crohn’s Disease and be able to relate them to their children. This process of communication is not only important for Children with Crohn’s are at high risk for problems with growth and proper sexual maturity. Furthermore, since they are often treated with various medications at an early age, the complications due to side effects from pharmaceutical drugs becomes much more prevalent.

The most common medication treatments for Crohn’s Disease in children include aminosalicylates, which are often used to treat mild to moderate cases. Corticosteroids are usually reserved for severe cases to reduce inflammation and hopefully drive the disease into remission. Corticosteroids are highly effective; however, they often result in serious physical and mental side effects.

Since one of the theories on the cause of Crohn’s Disease is infection within the digestive tract, antibiotics are often used to treat Crohn’s. The most accepted cause of Crohn’s Disease is an autoimmune response by the body. To counteract this overaggressive response by the body, immune suppressants are sometimes prescribed to ratchet down the body’s ability to attack itself. The risk of serious side effects is great so children taking these drugs have to be carefully monitored. Finally, biologic therapy, which consists of intravenously administering an antibody to fight Crohn’s, has been approved by the FDA. This class of drugs is adept at driving Crohn’s into remission.

The longer someone has Crohn’s the higher the likelihood surgery will become in the future. In fact, while the ultimate goal of medical doctors is to help Crohn’s patients avoid surgery, over half of the childhood victims of Crohn’s Disease require surgery in about ten to fifteen years after the condition manifests.

Benefits Of Drinking Water

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

The benefits of drinking water have been proven because studies have shown that around 80% of the world’s population is dehydrated. The chief reason for this condition is over consumption of caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee that make the body lose water. Water is a naturally available liquid that is the most important factor in human survival. Water comprises about 2/3rd of our total body weight. The biggest irony is that most of us don’t know what to drink when we are dehydrated. The answer is simple. Drink water!

The benefits of drinking water is an important factor in the proper health of the body systems. Drinking water has several health benefits. If you have high blood pressure or cancer, drink as much water as possible because water helps to stablized the blood pressure and promote the healing process of cancerous cells. Taking in adequate amounts of water if your are a diabetic is especially important because high blood sugar actually dehydrate the blood cells and causes the blood sugar levels to rise even higher. That’s why when a person come in the hospital in ketoacidosis the first line of action is to start an IV and get the person properly hydrated. Often, people forget to drink water unless they feel very thirsty. To help you to remember to drink water at regular intervals, you can set a timer or buy a watch that is equipped with a timer.

It is better to drink smaller quantities of water more frequently than to drink a lot of water at one time. It is recommended to drink 8 to 12 oz a day and if you have not been drinking water regularly, you should double the recommended amount because your cells are already dehydrate. Make sure that you don’t too much drink water in the morning prior to beginning any physical activity. It is very essential to plan a proper routine for water drinking.

Water is necessary for proper digestion and absorption of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, etc. that our body gets from the food we eat. Also, detoxification of the kidneys and liver along with the removal of toxins and wastes from the body happen to be major benefits of drinking water. You should not wait until you are dehydrated to drink water. Drinking water regularly is imperative because dehydration can result in serious illness.

The diverse benefits of drinking water include sustaining energy levels, being mentally and physically alert, removing toxins and wastes from the body and maintaining healthy skin. Drinking water also helps in reducing weight. Since water is a natural appetite suppressant, it helps to cut down overeating and that helps to maintain your proper weight. Doctors often say that, when you feel hungry, your body is actually craving water and not solid food.

Bear in mind that water has its exclusive qualities and other beverages cannot replace the benefits of drinking water. So make sure you drink adequate quantities of water every day to live a healthy and happy life.

The Traveling Office: Organizing Your Car

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I wish I had ____ with me. You fill in the blank. How many times have you been off-site, meeting with a client, only to discover you were missing a form or a brochure that would have helped you wrap up a discussion?

Whether you are in sales, real estate, consulting or a variety of other jobs, travel is usually involved. Even when you spend most of your day in an office, you still have to travel back and forth, often bringing work with you, or you might be meeting a client for lunch, and have that, I wish I had… comment running through your mind.

Here are some basics that would benefit everyone.

Front Seat

Calendar: Since everyone is now reachable at any time by cell phone, you would want to have a calendar handy, whether paper or electronic. If you use an electronic calendar but are not syncing with your PDA, then you can periodically print out a monthly calendar and carry that with you.

Notepad: If you have to pull over for an extended talk with a client, you want to make notes on the conversation. Do not count on storing everything in your head for later. Write it down now.

Index Cards: Carry these with you at all times. They can go in your shirt pocket, purse, briefcase, and car. Whenever something comes up that you need to do or want to remember, write it down on an index card. When you get back to the office, staple that to a full sheet of paper and place it in your Daily Action file.

Mileage Log: If you have it close at hand, you will be more likely to remember to record the miles traveled. It is so much harder to do this once a month or to recreate the data at the end of a tax year.

CDs: If you want to make good use of all the travel time, this is an opportunity to listen to recorded business books or to conference break-out sessions. On the other hand, if it is advantageous for you to relax before a meeting or while headed home, pick some music that unwinds you.

To store these materials, you might consider an auto organizer with multiple compartments, one that ties over the headrest and sits against the passenger seat. It provides easy access. When you have a passenger, you simply move it around so that it hangs in back of the seat, still within reach.

Have a zippered plastic case for extra pens, pencils, and other basic desk supplies. You do not want all of these to be loose in case of sudden stops where they could become flying projectiles.

Back Seat

Casual Reading: Have a folder of materials handy to grab any time you have unplanned open time-stopped traffic or arriving early for an appointment. It will allow you to effectively utilize your time while you wait, and in turn will lower the potential stress caused by the delay.

Map Book: Even if you have a GPS system, it is a good idea to have a backup for emergencies.

Umbrella: Do not leave this in your trunk. It does not cover you when there is a sudden downpour while you are heading into a meeting.

Trunk

Forms and Brochures: Use a small travel box or crate that holds hanging file folders. That way you can keep a supply in the car without having to guess what you may need every time you head out.

Product Samples: Get plastic bins that can contain your products. When you have them organized in containers, it leaves more room in your trunk.

Grippers: These pieces cling to your trunk carpeting and keep things from sliding around. Place them strategically at the corners of your containers.

If you use something up while you are out, make a note on an index card so you will remember to replenish that item when you get back.

Returning to your office, be sure to take out all of the new materials-order forms, business cards, conference bags, ToDo index cards-and bring them in right away. Replenish anything that you have used up. This will ensure that you always have what you need at hand, and your car does not become a clutter trap.

Your car is a reflection of you and your methods. If you find yourself embarrassed or apologizing when someone unexpectedly has to ride with you, make changes today.

The preparation will add to your confidence as you head out to your next meeting knowing that you have what you need. You are in control and you look the part.

Hardwood Flooring: Ancient Yet Modern

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Although for most of its history human beings have lived in dwellings with dirt floors, wooden flooring has existed for many centuries. In the past, before modern appliances and electricity, wood floors were handmade, it being a very labor-intensive activity. Today, modern technology has made it possible for even the homeowner of modest means to enjoy the benefits of a hardwood floor.

Why Choose A Hardwood Floor?

With so many other choices available in flooring materials (most of them synthetic), why are many people choosing to install a hardwood floor?

One reason is their durability. Unlike cheap, synthetic materials that crack and crumble over time, natural hardwood floors stand the test of time. They are also very durable - they can be used in the kitchen, the family room, bedrooms, even high-traffic areas like hallways and stairways.

Where many people are ill-informed today is in thinking that hardwood floors are expensive. Although the initial investment can be significant, hardwood floors actually increase in value as your home increases in value. Properly cared for, hardwood floors can dramatically increase the value of your home!

What Types of Wood Floors Exist?

There are two main types of hardwood floors — the solid floor, which is manufactured from a solid block of wood, and the engineered hardwood floor, which is essentially a layered wood product that has a veneer layer on the very top.

Hardwood flooring products today can be purchased in strip form, planks (like a strip, except longer), and parquet (where the wood is arranged into a design that is pleasing to the eye).

For your convenience, modern hardwood flooring products are available prefinished, which eliminates the need to sand and apply finish to the wood after installation (a great convenience for the DIY enthusiast), or they can be purchased unfinished, in which case the wood will be sanded and finished by professionals after installation in the home.

How Does Foot Traffic Affect The Choice of Hardwood Floors?

You should carefully consider the amount of foot traffic received by the area that you intend to lay floor in. In general, darker wood colors will show the wear due to foot traffic quicker than the lighter colors. In addition, high-traffic areas will need some additional maintenance about once a year - including a light sanding and application of additional coats of finish.

It is also true that a hardwood floor with a high-gloss finish will show traffic wear more quickly than hardwood floors with lower-gloss finishes. Rugs and mats are always a good choice to help protect these areas - particularly at the entrances of doors and hallways.

Some woods - notably hickory, oak and maple - with a higher density will take wear and traffic better than woods like pine that are less dense. Again, the denser woods may be more expensive, so consider your needs carefully.

Long Live Halloween!

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

The scent of fall is in the air and the colors of the season are gracing our landscapes. Know what that means? Halloween is right around the corner! Children everywhere are counting the weeks until this festive day arrives while parents wonder if their children should be allowed to trick or treat and whether today’s world is safe enough for the Halloween traditions of days gone by.

Well I say LONG LIVE HALLOWEEN! How can we deny our children the only day of the year when they are allowed to run up and down the street begging neighbors for candy? How can we deny them the pleasure of dressing up as superheroes and princesses and gallivanting around a neighborhood that’s been transformed into a one-night fantasy land?

While I believe Halloween should be enjoyed, I do believe we should take some safety measures to ensure our children have a safe Halloween in addition to having a fun one.

A Watchful Eye.

If you have young children who will be trick-or-treating this year, you need to realize that we live in a changing society. You need to keep a very close eye on your children and that means following along (even if from a few feet behind) as your children go door to door on their trick-or-treating mission.

Setting Ground Rules.

Halloween isn’t the time for a free-for-all. You need to set some ground rules. Let your children know what’s acceptable, what’s not, and what you expect from them in regard to their behavior. If the rules are laid out up front, there will be less confusion and, hopefully, less frustration all around.

Bright Clothing or Reflectors.

It can seem like kids are swarming through the neighborhoods on Halloween night. Drivers need to be especially careful, but not all are as careful as they should be. Because of this, you need to take extra precautions. Don’t let your children cross the street without you and when you do cross the street, make sure you have reflective clothing or a glow-in-the-dark nightstick with you.

Candy Checks.

As sad as it may be, you do need to check your child’s candy after they bring in the haul. Look for anything out of the ordinary. Throw away any unwrapped items, items with wrappers that look as if they’ve been tampered with, etc. And take care that not too much of the good stuff is eaten all in one sitting!

So is Halloween a dying holiday? Absolutely not! You just need to take the time to lay out ground rules and practice proper safety, and Halloween can be as much fun this year as it was when you were a kid! Watch out for those ghosts and goblins!

Copywriting Tips to Make Any Website Sell Better

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

It’s a fact that one website will pull many times the leads or sales as a competing website. What causes this large variance in results? It’s the copywriting on the website.

Here’s what works best from actual results and testing on dozens of websites we’ve done the copywriting for.

1. Websites have one main end purpose and that is to sell your products and/or services, to move people to action, to make money. In today’s high-tech world, most copywriting on websites forgets this vital fact and that is why they don’t perform better.

2. Make the website easy to “scan” with headlines, sub headlines, boxes, sections, colors and the like that give the reader the main benefits he will get. Almost all people are “scan first” or “scan only” readers. The headlines and sub headlines should take advantage of this fact.

3. Tell the reader what he will LOSE if he does not take the recommended action. Fear of loss is a great motivator.

4. Build up excitement, enthusiasm, passion and urgency to get the reader to take the desired action right now. Yes, excitement is contagious and it sells!

5. Make a great offer to get the prospect’s email address. In today’s overcrowded environment and with spam concerns, it’s not enough to just say “enter your email address for our newsletter.” Make a great offer including special reports, bonuses and the like in addition to the newsletter to get the maximum number of qualified signups.

6. Focus the copywriting because people want to buy from the expert specialists in a field. If the copy is too broad it will lose a lot of the best prospects, who of course, are the most likely to buy. A great way to do this is to have separated focused web pages for separate types of people or industries on the website.

7. Make the website as easy to use and find things as Amazon.com (for consumers) or Dell.com (for businesses). The copywriting and organization of these sites is a key reason they are ultra-successful.

8. Start thinking like the website reader (the prospect) and stop thinking like the marketer. Figure out what the prospect wants most from the products or services that they deliver, then come right out and tell him what benefits he’ll get, why, and what he needs to do now. Simple but it brings in billions.

9. Compare the product or service against the competitors to show and prove it’s superiority.

10. Copywriting is king and queen for the website to sell the maximum number of people. The right copywriting can bring up to double, even triple or more the current results for no additional marketing cost. Hire the best copywriter the business can afford, and don’t skimp because this one-time investment can be one of the best investments.

11. Test everything, measure it, use the winner, and always keep testing. This is the key to “optimizing” the website and all your marketing. Don’t guess - test and let the only vote that matters (the prospects) decide what works best.

Fishing Sea Walls And Riprap

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Tired of fishing with your GPS and finding nothing, tired of dragging that Carolina rig all over the bottom of the lake, tired of trying to come across that magic spot on the lake. Well you may be ready to try your hand at fishing rocky riprap or seawalls, those obvious shoreline, hugging features found on lakes, rivers and reservoirs across the county. These forms of cover can held bass throughout the year. These spots are simple to find and are easy to fish. Here are some tip for fishing riprap and seawalls.

SEAWALL PATTERN: When theres a large surface mat of water hyacinths has blown up against a long stretch of seawall. When you tie on a Gary Yamamoto custem bait 3 inches fat baby craw, with a big bullet weight and begin picking the floating vegation apart. Fishing floating mats against a seawall or near the seawall, there’s usually clean water underneath it all the way to the wall. This is a good spot do to combined horizontal cover with vertical and its open underneath. That crawl space will attract a lot of space.

Flip right through the top of the mat and start at the deep edge. But don’t forget to fish the seam between the mat and the seawall.

GIVE THE SEAWALL A HUG: One technique is paralleling the wall with hard plastic lures and buzz baits. Also hugging the wall with a lizard, tube, worm and creature is just as important. One of the most important things if your pitching against the wall is to get the bait to fall as close to the wall If you are using a baitcaster you have to feed line out to allow the bait to fall up against the wall. If you are using a spinning reel it’s the same just don’t close the bell until the bait hits the bottom. The other you can do is pitch the lure toward the wall and have it hit 1 to 3 inches before the wall, and then peel off line. It tends to fall more toward the wall.

FALL PATTERN: When fall comes the bass are migrating into and out of creeks, so the riprap provides an easy, dependable way to intercept bass. Fishing in the fall the bass are moving shallow or coming back out and they have to go through bridges to do that. So riprap along bridges would be a prime pattern Some good lures for this would be a shad colored crank bait like Rebel Wee R or 5A and 6A Bombers to crank the rocks, also the bomber long A jerk bait is another good choice. Cast parallel to the rock line and concentrate on deflecting the lure as often as possible. The biggest key in the fall is repetitive casting, you ask why, because the bass have seen lures all summer. So its important to cast repetition to a good looking area like a point of the riprap or a tree or brush laying down along the riprap.

PARALLEL PARKING FOR BASS: When it comes to bass fish there are not to many hard and fast rules but when you come across a seawall and lines of riprap, one rule rings come to mind. Take a casting angle that enables them to be paralleled with a lure. Another lure of choice for fishing seawalls and riprap or bulkheads are throwing a topwater and spinner baits in the morning, then a lipless crank bait or shallow diving crank bait later in the day. But regardless of the lure, always parallel them as much as possible and at least 45 degrees them, depending on the water depth and position the fish are in. Remember to put your lure as close to the wall as possible, or even bang it off the wall as you bring it back to the boat.

RIPRAP ROADMAP: Riprap can be intimidating to some fisherman or woman. Whether it is the foundation of a bridge, current break or erosion control for a stretch of shoreline, riprap can look over whelming in some situations. You may have riprap two miles long and it all looks the same, so where do you start bass fishing. You got to understand what lies beneath the surface is not exactly the same. Its important to locate irregular features in an otherwise uniform line of riprap. So you look for visible things like logs, treetop or flotsam that has drifted against the rocks or an unusually large rock is always worth fishing. But there are concealed irregular features that will hold a lot more bass. On lakes, a small ditch or creek may run into the riprap and come to a stop. Usually, a bridge crosses a channel and there will be a culvert nearby on one side of the riprap foundation. This can be an outstanding spot.0

Social Security And The Mystery Of The Missing Boomer FICA Payments

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Hardly a day goes by that we don’t hear FED Chairman Ben Bernake or some other voice of the government bemoaning the sad and unsustainable expense of Social Security. You know the drill: How can it go on with all the baby boomers reaching retirement age?

Here’s Bernake at his most daring to date, addressing the Economics Club of Washington, which, we all know, wields much more influence than AARP: ”Reform of our unsustainable entitlement programs” should be a priority. “The imperative to undertake reform earlier rather than later is great.”

But hold it a moment. Haven’t all those baby boomers watched the Federal Government neatly extract FICA payments from their paychecks for the forty or so years they’ve worked?

So where’s the money?

If you really take into consideration that the number of retirees will always pretty much equal the number of people who were recently working and kicking in their share of taxes toward Social Security, you arrive at the conclusion that all this talk about the unsustainable expenditure on “entitlements” as fiscally irresponsible is, in fact, an unsustainable bit of chicanery.

You may ask, What about inflation? Isn’t it a factor? Of course, but, hey, what’s new about that?

So we arrive at this very puzzling question? Why is it that with more people retiring, there is not more money available?

Don’t tell me the FEDS raided the till for other priorities?

Anyway, bottom line is, if we burned up the retirement funds of the boomers on bombs and idiotic wars, it’s time to moderate those expenditures, so the money that was slipped out of Social Security to fund those various insanities can be slipped back into it.

We promise not to notice its temporary absence.

First Steps To Home Remodeling

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Home remodeling has become a national pastime, a passion and sometimes an obsession. We all want our homes to look better and feel more comfortable. Home remodeling magazines and television programs are everywhere, and the home improvement industry is booming. Almost everyone is in the middle of a project or about to embark on a new way of updating the home. It can be easy to do and extremely rewarding. If you are thinking about taking on a remodeling project, following a few basic steps will make the process more enjoyable.

The first step to be considered when planning your remodeling project is the basic design of your home. Most people begin a project by thinking ways to make their homes look better, and considering possible design options to improve the look, feel and aura of the place. This is where the concept of design for home remodeling comes into play. To plan your design, decide whether you want to hire a design expert, an architect or another home remodeling professional to come in and visualize your ideas. It will be necessary to create a design that you can afford, and will really love. You want to create a rapport with the professional you hire, to get them as excited about the project as you are. Sit down with your architect or design, come to an agreed plan, determine how much you can afford, and be sure to stick to your budget.

The second consideration for home remodeling is the project implementation. Plan and review your home remodeling design with your contractor, and consider any suggestions that he or she may have about the progress or the costs of the project. Choose the materials and products that you will need to successfully complete your home remodeling project. If possible, first purchase the materials you’ll need right away, then later you can pick up additional products you’ll need to complete the job. Make sure you consider the required time allotment and ask your architect, designer or contractor to come up with a detailed construction schedule. There will be steps to follow for each job and crews to schedule, so it’s important that you don’t overlook this important step in planning your project.

A conference is necessary to ensure that your home remodeling project is completed successfully. Insist that you meet with your home remodeling contractor, architect or designer, job-site supervisor and any other construction crewmembers involved in your project. Consider this a brainstorming session in which you can make note of important matters, consider new ideas and prepare for any possible changes from the original plan. Everyone involved in every step of the home renovation must be made aware of any changes to the original plan. It is also important that you set ground rules for your home remodeling project. Express these rules to your contractor and jobsite supervisor, and prepare a communication plan that will ensure your direction will be passed along to everyone working on the project. In such case, the primary contact person will generally be the job-site supervisor. A home remodeling project is a huge investment, so be serious about the entire process. Pay attention to every detail, and feel free to make comments or ask questions regarding the progress.

Finally, make the area easy for the crew to get the job done. Remove furniture and personal belongings from the work area. Try to put up a temporary kitchen area and have toilet facilities available for the crew to use. Make trash bins accessible and ask if construction fencing is required. If large quantities of supplies will be delivered, such as lumber or flooring, be sure that there is ample and accessible storage room. This area should be secure and protected from the elements, as the materials may not be installed on the same day they’re delivered.

Remodeling your home is a rewarding experience. Hiring a contractor, architect or home designer can help ensure that the job is done properly. The expense will fully pay for itself in the satisfaction and enjoyment you’ll receive from your newly remodeled home.

The Perfect Catch: Planning A Fishing Vacation

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

When planning for a fishing vacation the first thing you have to know is what type of fishing would you like to do. There are so many different types from fly fishing to deep sea fishing to lake fishing that it is hard choose from, especially from the avid angler. If you care more for the location than the type of fish than pick a place you would like to go and see if those places have fishing nearby, which they probably do.

Many fishing trips are also planned depending on what time of year it is. In some bodies of water the fish bite more than at others for various reasons. When planning a fishing trip look into the fishing conditions at the place that you want to go and try to go when there is a better chance of the fish biting.

The type of trip also is based on the type of fish you want to catch because obviously you aren’t going to go fly fishing if you want to catch a marlin. If you want a certain type of fish scout out where they are and go from there. When planning a fishing vacation there are so many things that factor in tow what trip you want to take by knowing what you want out of the trip it makes it that much easier to plan for it.

Lodging is also important when planning a fishing trips because many times the fish bite better early in the morning so you want to stay as close to the fishing area as possible. Look at lodges, hotels, and campsites beforehand and if you picked the trip make sure to make reservations well ahead of time as you don’t want to get to a place that is full only to have to go further from the fishing spot.

The most important thing to know when planning a fishing trip is what type of trip you want to take, whether it be by fish, area, or fishing style, knowing this will make the planning much easier.
